Money Has Come in Many Forms: 5,000 Years From Shells to Code

The history of money, from barter and shells to coins, paper and Bitcoin

Money hasn't always been paper bills or numbers in an app. For thousands of years, it has changed form, from cattle to coins to code. Here's a quick tour.

The ancient world: money you could hold

  • Before 3000 BCE: barter. People traded cattle, grain and goods directly.
  • Around 3000 BCE: the shekel. In Mesopotamia, a shekel was a measured weight of silver (or barley) used to settle payments.
  • Around 1200 BCE: cowrie shells. Small shells became money across parts of Asia and Africa.
  • Around 600 BCE: the first coins. Minted in Lydia, in what's now Turkey.

Paper takes over: money becomes a promise

  • Around 1000 CE: paper money. First widely used in China. Lighter to carry, backed by a promise.
  • 1792: the U.S. dollar. Created by the Coinage Act.
  • 1971: the dollar leaves gold. The U.S. ended the dollar's convertibility to gold. Its value now rests on trust.

Money goes digital: money becomes data

  • 1950: the first credit card. Diners Club launched the first multipurpose charge card.
  • 1990s: online banking. People could pay and bank from home.
  • 1999: the euro. It launched electronically; cash arrived in 2002.
  • 2009: Bitcoin. The first cryptocurrency went live.

Bitcoin by the numbers

  • 21 million: the maximum number of bitcoins that can ever exist.
  • About 20 million: already mined as of 2026.
  • An estimated 3 to 4 million: lost forever in forgotten wallets.

That fixed supply is why some people call it "digital gold." But its price can still swing wildly. Learn before you buy, and never invest money you can't afford to lose.

The form changes. The habits don't.

Shells, coins or code, wealth still comes from the same few habits:

  • Spend less than you earn.
  • Keep cash for emergencies.
  • Invest for the long term.
  • Learn before you buy anything new.
